A Simple Request

It was a chilly morning in Kampala, and the sun was just beginning to peek through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the bustling streets. In a small, modest home, fifteen-year-old Aisha sat on the edge of her bed, her heart heavy with worry. Today was the day she would talk to her mother about something that had been weighing on her mind.

Aisha had always been the responsible one in her family. She helped her younger siblings with their homework, cooked dinner when her mother was busy at work, and took care of household chores. But now, as she faced the reality of her first period approaching, she felt a wave of anxiety wash over her. She had seen her friends at school struggle with the same issue, and the thought of not having the proper hygiene products left her feeling vulnerable and scared.

With a deep breath, Aisha gathered her courage and approached her mother, who was busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen. “Mama, can we talk?” Aisha said softly.

Her mother looked up, sensing the seriousness in her daughter’s voice. “Of course, my dear. What’s on your mind?”

Aisha hesitated for a moment, choosing her words carefully. “I… I need to ask for something important. It’s about hygiene products for my period.”

Her mother’s expression changed, and Aisha could see the concern in her eyes. “Oh, Aisha. I wish I could provide everything you need, but things are tight right now. We have to prioritize food and school fees.”

Aisha nodded, understanding the struggles their family faced. But the weight of her situation pressed heavily on her heart. She knew there was a way to find the help she needed, so she decided to reach out to the SHEAID Foundation, a local organization she had heard about from her friends at school. They provided hygiene products to girls in need, and Aisha felt a flicker of hope ignite within her.

That afternoon, with her heart racing, Aisha sent a message to SHEAID through their WhatsApp number. “Hello, my name is Aisha. I’m 15 years old, and I’m reaching out because I need hygiene products for my period. My family is struggling, and I don’t want to miss school or feel embarrassed. Is there any way you can help me?”

After what felt like forever, a response came through. “Hi Aisha! Thank you for reaching out. We understand how difficult this can be, and we’re here to help. Please provide us with your address, and we’ll arrange to deliver some essential hygiene products to you.”

Tears of relief filled Aisha’s eyes as she typed back her address, her heart swelling with gratitude. The next day, a friendly volunteer from SHEAID arrived at her home, carrying a bag filled with pads, wipes, and a comforting note that read, “You are strong, and you are not alone. We’re here to support you.”

As Aisha accepted the bag, she felt a wave of warmth and empowerment wash over her. In that moment, she realized that asking for help was not a sign of weakness, but rather a step towards taking control of her own journey. With the support of SHEAID, she felt more prepared to face this new chapter in her life.

From that day forward, Aisha vowed to share her story with other girls at school, encouraging them to seek help when needed. She understood that together, they could break down the barriers of stigma surrounding menstrual health and support one another through every challenge.

Aisha’s heartfelt request had not only provided her with the hygiene products she needed but had also ignited a spark of hope and resilience within her. And as she stepped into her new reality, she knew that she was never truly alone.
